VirusTotal, created by a cybersecurity company, checks websites and files using a vast array of malware scanners. It’s a powerful tool for detecting malware, but keep these tips in mind:
  • Don’t upload personal or classified files—everything submitted is publicly accessible. The tool is free partly to help identify new malware.
  • Beware of false positives—if fewer than 4 scanners flag a file or site, it could be safe, especially if it has a high community ranking.
Always try not to download from untrusted sources. If VirusTotal flags something, search the flagged item’s name (e.g., “[name] VirusTotal”) to find forums discussing whether it’s a real threat or a false alarm:

Tools/Applications

    Virus Total

  • VirusTotal is runned by a cybersecurity company that created this tool for checking websites or files. It’s like a library containing a vast amount of open source virus scanners for finding a wide variety of malware content.

  • There is 2 big things to remember using this tool

    • Do not upload any personal or classified documents; all documents uploaded to the service are in a public accessibility pool. One of the big reasons this tool is free is so they can keep finding new malware.

    • With it using 70 different malware scanners it can come up with false positives. A simple way to go would be if less than 4 malware scripts flags the item or website then there is a high chance the item is safe especially if you look at their community ranking and it has been placed high with the community score.

    • What I do is never download from any none trusting places and sources or if I do and it ask for administrative privileges then do not accept and uninstall right away know if I was checking a item with virus total is something is flagged it will tell you the specific piece so I would copy that name and search it directly or with “Virus total” Beside the name with google or what ever search engine you use and should pop up forums talking about that specific file letting you know if its a false flag or is a real threat

    Have I Been pwned

  • Haveibeenpwned is another service like a library where they harvest public data breaches to find the data of what personal information was exposed that is linked to your email account. A great tool to help keep informed on what is happening with your personal information. And how to proceed further if you have been breached.
